The personal health of a seafarer is the most important things of all when you are boarding a vessel. A lot of questions will come specially when we talk about the issues of health when you are at sea. Otherwise, some of people are frightened what will happen to them when they were in the vessel they probably think they will be in danger or not in a good condition such as always vomiting ,feeling drowsy, and, no appetite in eating their foods. In spite in all of these happening the paramount is always starts in safety voyage. When we talk about the life of a seafarer the supreme needs begins of health conditions. There are four rules regulation when we talk about the are of food consumption.First , is the master shall ensure that the crew is furnished with proper and sufficient food. The Minister of Economic and Business Affairs may lay down regulations to this effect. Secondly, If the master considers it is necessary to reduce food during the voyage, the crew shall be entitled to claim compensation. Third ,The master shall not personally contract for the catering of the crew. Lastly, The master shall supervise the sanitary conditions and the cleanliness on board. The Minister of Economic and Business Affairs may lay down rules to that effect. It was rules in food sanitary consumption. Speaking in hours of rest a seafarer shall have regular, undisturbed periods of rest, adequate to ensure health and safety. The Minister of Economic and Business Affairs may lay down rules about the hours of rest and hours of work. The provisions of hours of work do not apply to merchant ships. the next question,
II. The diseases caught by the seafarers
Why many seafarers caught in diseases ? Quite different to the situation in the past, seafarers rarely get an opportunity to visit places far away from the ports of call, due to the rapid turn around time at ports. However, they are still exposed to infections at ports of call. Recent studies conducted, mostly in Europe, have shown concerns on Malaria, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Gastropod-Intestinal (GI) infections. Although much concern has been shown to the resurgence of Tuberculosis (TB) infection in many countries, whether seafarers are at risk of contracting TB at ports of call is uncertain. Some of these infections which pose a risk have also been identified at the seventh session of the ILO/WHO Joint Committee on the health of seafarers.
III. The type of medical examination
In keeping us away from such various kind of diseases we need to check up our selves so we must undergo to medical examination that’s its necessary to discussed the medical examination. The guidelines have been compiled for the use of Medical Inspectors who are assessing an individual’s fitness to work at sea. the seafarer have a duty of care to provide a safe work environment and protect the health, safety and welfare of employees. Employees similarly have a duty of care for their own safety and that of the people they work with and the community. Medical assessment of fitness is one aspect of meeting this duty of care. The primary objectives of a medical assessment of fitness for duty at sea are: to ensure that individuals are fit to perform the essential tasks of their job at sea effectively and to anticipate and, where possible, prevent the avoidable occurrence of ill-health offshore which could place individuals, their colleagues and emergency personnel at risk. In order for us to compensate this kind of diseases.
IV. Prevention of diseases on board
As they have said cynical it says “prevention is better than cure”.Many of seafarers have been victim of various kind of diseases. However, it could have a cessation . By washing their hands with soap or an apppropriate manner before they eat, drink a lot of vitamins from a to z, take a bath every day, cleaning their comfortable bedrooms, comfort room, etc, and eat a balance diet that’s how to prevent in any kinds of diseases. Seafarers is a bustle work. Thus this of job can create any kinds of diseases but you can compensate it by following the safety practice of proper hygiene and sanitation. You will have an excellent safeguard from your whole body.
