Professional Responsibilities Essay

As a high school educator I am always trying to find new and innovative ways to improve my instructional style and student learning at all levels. Being able to retain, recall and transfer information effectively is important to me as a Career and Technology Education teacher. Making sure that I keep up with the latest instructional materials and equipment to enhance and engage students learning is a constant. Organization and Time Management are the areas in which I am strong. The Self-Assessment has also confirmed that I need improvements in the area of involving students in the designing the lessons.

Having student input and feedback on what they learn and how it relates to all students is vital to journey as an effective teacher. Demographics in our school district have changed over the past seven years. Making sure that I plan lessons for such a diverse group of students has my undivided attention. It is my desire to plan lessons that is conducive to all level of learners and their academic success. Teaching high school keeps me busy planning lessons and facilitating my class.

It has been through staff development training, my mentor and the help of other co-workers who introduced me to different programs filled with interesting business activities to enhance my instructional strategies. This has been essential in assisting me to accomplish my daily classroom routine. Two years of experience as a high school Instructional Technology teacher is an asset to my Masters’ journey. Being able to witness young learners demonstrates their creative skills and knowledge through the advancement of technology keeps me learning.

However, the use of the internet and other technical programs will prepare them for future careers to become productive citizens in society. Domain 2 Classroom Environment Creating an environment of respect and rapport in my classroom with my students was done by getting to know each one likes and dislikes. Everyday, I make sure that I speak to my students in the right tone of voice. Listening to what they have to say without judging them, gives me the opportunity to learn something about their beliefs and values. It takes time to build respect and have a good rapport with your students.

In my classroom, I have set high expectations for all level of learners. I teach my students to never say “I can’t” because we are solution finders. Establishing a culture for learning is vital to my personal instructional abilities and students’ academic success. Students’ work is displayed in the back of the room. I encourage my students to support classmates and peers who participate in extracurricular activities. Managing classroom procedures has been better this year for me because I learn so much my first year facilitating my own class.

I placed a table in front of the room with and in basket and pick up basket for all classes. As students enter they place they due assignments in their designated basket and pick up today’s lecture information. Managing student behavior is much easier because classroom rules and expectations were handed out the first week of school. Each student had to take them home and get their parents signature stating that they have read them and understand what behavior was expected. As the teacher, I make sure that I model expected behavior toward my students.

My classroom is organized to fit the needs of all learners. Students have adequate space, technical equipment, and other resources which is conducive to meet academic goals in the classroom. Domain 3 Instruction Engaging students in the learning process must be done through effective communication. In my classroom, I intentionally give clear directions and procedures by writing them out and going over them with my students. Students are given an opportunity to ask questions if they still do not understand content assignment during instruction.

To promote student engagement to further understand content information, students are asked to give examples or to explain what they know. I use to pose short answer questions, after much training and mentoring, questions are presented so that the learners can be challenged to engage in collaboration of their views. I actively seek opportunities to engage students in learning by integrating activities which challenges learners to think strategic on how to solve problems. I make connections to students’ cultures and which involves each one intellectually.

Group assignments are initiated in my classroom to promote all level of learning. This type of assignment defines the structure to the lesson and requires participation of all students. The main purpose for group assignment in my classroom is for students who are shy, non-verbal, and energetic to have the opportunity to express their ideas in a small setting with students who have different learning styles. Using assessment is vital to my understanding the needs for each student. As my students work on their daily classroom assignments, I monitor them by walking around the room and verifying engagement in activities.

Quizzes, homework, and tests are implemented to assess student understanding. Feedback from students is welcomed so that I can see what is needed for learners to excel in their academic goals. After observing students and assessing their comprehensiveness of assigned activity, modification takes place to accommodate students learning needs, I rate myself as progressing to proficient. Domain 4 Professional Responsibilities Teaching is a profession which different qualities and skills are needed to compliment your beliefs in order to carry out instruction successfully.

Each day leads to great opportunities for my personal and professional growth. I am always looking for ways to improve my strategies and approach in planning my lessons to engage students successfully. In my assessment, I try to make accurate judgments if my lessons were engaging and understandable by my students. Because I teach the same subject every year, I have the opportunity to reflect on what went well, what needs improvements, and what could be added to enhance lessons. Maintaining accurate records has been a priority from the beginning of my teaching profession.

Personally keeping good records have been one of my routines which I practice daily. My class events, student progress, instructional, grades, emails and phone call log to parents, and non-instructional matters are a requirement of teachers in my school. From the beginning of school, I always try to build a relationship with parents by communicating through emails, phone calls, and sending a copy of the syllabus home for them to read, sign, and return by their student. Throughout the year students are aware of what lesson is next. Objectives and goals are clearly written on board daily of what will be covered in the classroom.

Partnering and building a relationship with my colleagues who teach the same subject has been vital to my professional growth. My mentor has been the best influence these past 2 years of my teaching career. Participating in staff development and other professional communities increases my expertise. Integrating technology has development my skills and abilities to implement learning activities in a more effective way. I am committed to ongoing professional training to meet the needs of our twenty-first century learners. I hold myself to high standards by demonstrating integrity, honesty, ethical conduct in every way possible.

Complying with district policies and procedures before my administrators, colleagues, and students is a must for growth and moving up in the profession. Being a highly respected professional teacher is vital to working coherently and cohesively with my peers. It also allows me to be aware of my students’ individual needs. Modeling my every expectation before my students is a way to show them commitment in serving them. Therefore interaction in my classroom with students will show my willingness to communicate to solve new and old problems. Distinguished Level According to Framework

There are areas where evidence is being demonstrated at a distinguished level according to framework. Planning and preparation is at distinguished level because I demonstrate knowledge of my subject through designing lessons according to local and state standards, student’s culture and interests, classroom interaction, using technology during instruction, responding to students work, and providing a syllabus at the beginning of the school year to students and parents what will be covered in content. Lessons, activities are being presented in real life situations so that students can relate and understand grade level curriculum.

Creating a classroom environment where students feel safe and learning takes place is distinguished because my room is arranged to benefit all level of learners and their specific needs. I interact with my students with respect. My students trust me and share many life situations in confidence. In my classroom my students work well together. If they see a student is struggling in an area, most of the time, two students will assist that student until he or she understand information. They totally respect each other and are careful when collaborating with each other through discussion and small groups.

Students’ behavior is managed according to classroom rules and procedures. Therefore they know how unwanted behavior will be redirected in a positive manner. Communicating with my students is clear and understandable because my students can see the learning objectives for each day written on the board in front of the classroom. However, there are activities or work sheets for them to demonstrate understanding on how to perform or solve instructional information. Students are given matching, fill in the blanks, or opportunity to verbally express their understanding of content material.

Using questioning techniques are proficient. I am learning new ways on how to arrange questions to engage student’s interest by allowing them to explain or give examples of what they mean. To draw students further into discussion, I normally have a “warm up” at the beginning of class over a current event or nation issue which relates to learning objectives. To further engage students in learning, other resource materials, visual aides, and technology are used to challenge their cognitive skills. Assessing their understanding and skills are done by class work, homework assignments, weekly quizzes, and six weeks test.

Feedback is given as I monitor their progress. If some of the students are having a difficult time then I re-teach lesson, modify it for learners with specific needs. I demonstrate flexibility in learning styles so that all learners can be actively engaged and feel comfortable responding to questions or discussion. In my professional responsibilities when reflecting on teaching is proficient because I am a fairly new teacher and I am learning by having positive interaction with my colleagues during learning communities and staff development.

Parents are involved concerning their student progress through emails, progress report, and family access through district website. Judging myself on how well a lesson went or if my students understood what I was saying is done daily because their academic success rely on my instructional strategies. Assessing my lesson is mostly done by how my students respond or the questions they asked during and after the lesson. Keeping accurate record for me is distinguished because I am very organized and like to have things done in an orderly fashion.

Students can access website to view any missed homework, make up work needed, re-testing opportunities, or current grades. In the school where I teach, handling student’s money is controlled through head of departments of student leadership teacher. Any copy of invoices and inventory sheets is kept filed in alphabetical order for easy references. Building a relationship with my student parents has been a great work in progress. Communicating with families or parents is proficient because they can easily be contacted using emails or direct phone calls.

Specific concerns about high school students can be tedious due to the NCLB Act. I have found that the majority of my parents are willing to assist in making sure students are performing at their best. I keep a phone log of calls and email to parents but recently we are able to log it onto the student database file through the skyward system. This gives other teachers the opportunity to see each other parental contacts. Participating in learning communities is proficient for me because this is my second year as a classroom teacher and I want to learn as much as possible.

I have built a great relationship with my administrators, colleagues, other professionals to enhance my skills, knowledge, of the educational environment. Having their support is great. I have also found support with the teacher’s social group outside of school. Vision on Reaching Goal (10 INTASC Standards) INTASC Principle 1: The teacher understands the central concepts of the discipline to be taught. When I plan lessons they are going to be designed according to Cedar Hill High School District and the Texas state standards. This will help me reach my goal of distinguished in every instructional area.

INTASC Principle 2: The teacher designs instruction that meets the developmental needs of all learners. My goal is to design instruction whereas all learners (504, SPED, IEPS, and regular) at the high school can comprehend intended objectives to meet their learning levels. Lesson plans will be developed to meet the specific, physical, and academic needs of each individual student. INTASC Principle 3: The teacher integrates a multicultural perspective in instruction. All of my lessons will continue to demonstrate consideration for the needs of all students.

Multicultural lessons will continue to be a vital part of instruction so that my students can connect to what is different from their environment. Making sure that I am familiar with all cultures and what students are interested will continue to be one of my professional strategies in design content lessons. INTASC Principle 4: The teacher understands principles, techniques, advantages, and limitations, associated with various teaching and learning strategies (e. g. , cooperative learning, direct instruction, inquiry learning, and whole group discussion).

One of my most effective learning strategies is where I group students who have nothing in common and have them to put together a power point presentation on what they would change in this world if they had the opportunity. I will continue to use different questioning techniques to check for understanding and student collaboration. INTASC Principle 5: The teacher plans active learning experiences involving all students. The use of the white board, overhead projector, visual aids, and computer lab are all a part of active learning experience for all level of learners.

I ask students what they are interested in and give them the opportunity to demonstrate it by using visual such as posters and power-point to experience active learners. INTASC Principle 6: The teacher integrates instructional technology as appropriate to enrich learning opportunities. The integration of technology will be implemented by using their cell phones, I Pads, computers, cameras, and lap-tops to enhance learning. Students can use their computers to email assignments, check grades or review missing work.

INTASC Principle 7: The teacher knows when and how to adjust instruction/plans to meet student needs and enhance learning for all students. Re-teaching a prior lesson in a different way to accommodate all level of learners is done weekly. Making necessary adjustments to lesson plans will be a continuous strategy for learners’ specific needs. For my professional growth to become distinguished, I will continue to look for new innovative ways, resources, and expertise from colleagues. INTASC Principle 8: The teacher analyzes the data from a variety of formal and informal assessments to increase the continuous achievement of all learners.

To ensure students are learning, I keep accurate records of analysis of assessments, quizzes, group discussions, classroom participation, six week test, high-stake assessment scores to increase learning at all levels. Students are given feedback so that they can assess their own learning to improve in areas most needed. INTASC Principle 9: The teacher reflects and evaluates the effect of his/her personal and/or professional choices on others (students, parents, and staff) in the learning community.

My mentor had me to keep a log showing my growth from one semester on how I communicate with my students, respond to parents concerns, and my relationship with my colleagues. Knowing how to adapt to changes in my personal life has encouraged me to adapt quickly to changes in my professional choices. Each day my relationship has grown with the parents of my students because I have made sure that they are aware what their student is achieving and not accomplishing. They have been vital to making sure their student comes to class and be productive. INTASC Principle 10: The teacher consults and utilizes school-based resource personnel (e. . , special educator, guidance counselor, speech-language pathologist, ESOL teacher,) to support all students’ learning and well-being. Counselors emails and give me hand written information on what is allowed for supporting and accommodating all learning needs of students. We are in constant contact to make sure that students’ educational goals are being met. Records notifying teachers of 504/dyslexia accommodation plans are kept in each individual student file to meet their learning needs. Lesson is modified accordingly to increase their understanding at learning level.

IEPS’ are also given to accommodate learning needs of my Ell, SPED, and Inclusion learners. The resources are used to make sure the student continues to learn and their specific needs are being met daily according to local and state standards. If a student does not feel comfortable in my class setting, I can send that students to the resource special education room. Students can work their assignments, test, or homework and be relieved of any anxiety he or she might be feeling in the regular class setting. This strategy seems to be very effective in accommodating all students with different needs.

Students with special accommodations are able to work on any work sheets, classroom assignment independently and willingly. Assignments are thoroughly completed and in a timely manner when the right resources and accommodations are made according to school based resources. Students with specific needs are also given extra time to complete any assignment and test to be successful in learning. My communications are given clear in oral and written form. As a professional, it is my responsibility to demonstrate knowledge of content to make sure that all students can be successful in learning expected objectives and meet goals.
