Most parents these days feed their children fast foods instead of a well cooked meal, but they sometimes don’t know the damage that they’re doing.
Later on, when it’s already too late they will see the damage done and it may turn out to be a permanent problem maybe even fatal. Fast food restaurants may be the cause of some diseases these days. Fast food obesity is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the United States. According to the CDC, in 1994 the rates of obesity across all 50 states did not exceed 19% of the population. In most states, the rate was less than 14%. In 2007, only one state – Colorado – had obesity rates of less than 19%. In most of the states, the rate was greater than 25%.
Unfortunately, fast food obesity is a major risk factor of ten very serious diseases and health problems. The number one of all the diseases caused by fast food obesity is heart disease. Heart disease is one of the most common and most devastating in our time. Large amounts of body fat usually result in higher levels of LDL cholesterol and lower levels of HDL. Both factors can increase your risk of heart disease which is the number one cause of death in the United States. One of the fastest growing obesity related diseases is diabetes.
With diabetes, your pancreas can not produce enough insulin to covert sugars into energy for your cells. The rest of the sugar ends up floating around in your blood and causing damage. Another major disease is Dyslipidemia it could be considered a junk food obesity related illness. That’s because the disease occurs when LDL levels and triglycerides are abnormally high. Having this condition puts you at greater risk of coronary heart disease, and most physicians attribute its development directly to weight gain.
Respiratory Problems are also another disease caused by this fast food restaurant. Just as being overweight puts more stress on your heart, it also causes your lungs to work harder in order to get the oxygen needed where it needs to faster. Plus, conditions such as plague build-up from high cholesterol in the arteries can make it harder for oxygen to move free through your system. Breathing problems, including asthma, are also more common in obese people. Another effect that fast food restaurants have on us is poor nutrition. Places like Burger King and Mc Donald’s aren’t considered healthy.
On a typical day when children eat fast food, they consume substantially more total calories, with poorer nutritional quality, than on a day when they do not eat fast food, according to a study by researchers from Children’s Hospital Boston, the Agricultural Research Service of the U. S. Dept. of Agriculture, and Harvard School of Public Health. Thirty percent of the children in the survey ate fast food on any given day during the survey, and they ate an average of 187 calories a day more than those who did not eat fast food.
These additional calories could account for an extra six pounds of weight gain per year, according to senior author David S. Ludwig, director of the Obesity Program at Children’s Hospital Boston. Typical fast food meals consist of hamburgers or cheeseburgers, french fries, and sugar-sweetened sodas. They are frequently ”super sized” at very little additional cost, encouraging children and families to purchase larger portions. These meals, which are high in refined starch and added sugar, have a high glycemic index and glycemic load.
The glycemic index refers to the rise in blood glucose occurring after consumption of a food containing carbohydrates. High glycemic diets have been associated with an increase in insulin levels and may contribute to excessive weight gain. In some studies, high glycemic load meals have been shown to increase hunger and thus food consumption over the course of a day. There are now an estimated 247,155 fast food restaurants nationwide, and fast food pervades virtually all segments of our communities, including public school cafeterias. Constipation is not having a bowel movement as often as you usually do, or having a tough time going because the stool is hard and dry. It’s a very common problem, and usually happens because a person’s diet doesn’t include enough fluids and fiber. Most of the time, constipation is due to a diet that doesn’t include enough water and fiber, both of which help your bowels move properly. People who eat a lot of fast food may find they’re constipated more often.
This is because fast food is full of fats (burgers, fries, and milkshakes) and processed sugars (candy, cookies, sugary soft drinks). A healthier diet that includes high-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can keep your stool from getting hard and dry. Some of the effects of consuming a lot of fast food is diseases, poor nutrition, and may even lead to constipation. Fast food should be eaten moderately and not too frequently, because it may have some dangerous causes against you and your health.
